Restoring Fair Sport to Women

Sport categories, such as age, weight or sex, exist in order to create a fair and safe environment in which to compete or participate.

Without any sport categories, only young males would be selected for teams or become champions.

Nobody has the right to identify into a different sport category, because if they did, it would erode the integrity of that category.

A heavyweight cannot identify as a lightweight and compete against lightweights.

An adult cannot identify as a child and compete against children.

We are aware of widespread concerns where sports policies permit people to identify into opposite sex categories, across multiple sports across the UK. The impact on the different sexes is asymmetrical, with the harms falling overwhelmingly onto women.

Men's sport is largely unaffected by this as females, regardless of identity, tend to compete in the female category. That said, while it is not unfair or unsafe for the men when a trans-identifying female competes against them, men also have a right to single-sex sport.

The reason the Female category exists in all sports is to include women and girls but the inclusion of males into the Female category ends up excluding women and girls.

Concerns range from demoralisation, missed opportunities, places and rankings taken, increased injury risk, privacy and dignity concerns. This has been compounded by a lack of consent and a silencing of these legitimate concerns.

The Supreme Court ruling in April 2025 clarified the existing law so it is clear that such policies are potentially unlawful, opening up the sports governing bodies and clubs to discrimination risk. This also exposes organisations to insurance problems as insurers may not cover an unlawful policy.

We advocate that sports policies must comply with the law so a Male category is only for biological males and a Female category is only for biological females. This applies to all levels of sport, elite, grassroots or a recreational activity. This applies to changing rooms and toilets. Females with a trans identity are included in the Female category, Mixed-sex or Open categories (the potential exception to this would be where someone has taken testosterone because this would be a doping issue in sport). Males with a trans identity are included in the Male category, Mixed-sex or Open categories.
